A national park had a big increase in visitors and its trails were covered in human feces and toilet paper.

Hikers and backpackers will be required to have a toilet bag system with them at the park.

The National Park Service announced the change on Friday, April 22, after seeing a dramatic increase in human poop and toilet paper on the park's trails and campsites.

The highest point in Texas is not a toilet.

The National Park Service says that the toilet bags keep the waste and odor inside. It is safe to throw away in the trash.

Park tourists can buy them at a visitor center.

Affected backpackers will be required to carry a minimum of one bag per person per night for the duration of their trip and present proof that they have the required number of bags before their permit will be issued.

The first national park to have poop problems isn't Guadalupe Mountains. In 2020, Zion National Park rangers in Utah found nearly 10 pounds of human poop along the Narrows hiking trail.

The Virgin River and the narrowest part of Zion Canyon are where the Narrows comes from. According to the National Park Service, the path is one of the most popular at the national park.

There are no restrooms beyond the trail head, which is why many hikers leave poop along the trail. Tourists are required to throw away the solid waste they carry from the canyons.

Rescuers say a woman calls for help after falling into a vault toilet.

The 21-year-old motorcyclist died at the park.
