  • The unborn child of Rob Velez and Zofia Fenrych needs surgery.

  • She only has a 10 to 20 per cent chance of survival without the complex operation.

  • Since the operation is only available in the US, the baby's family in the UK needs to raise $3.2 million dollars.

Zofia Fenrych was overjoyed when she saw her unborn baby for the first time at a routine ultrasound during her 16th week of pregnancy on February 5, 2022.

The 40-year-old told Insider that she was sucking her thumb and moving around. Her partner, Rob Velez, 49, could barely contain his excitement as they looked at the screen together and saw they were expecting a second daughter.

The radiographer was talking but suddenly stopped. According to Fenyrch, she looked at the baby's heart for a while and then the medical professional said something was wrong.

It took a specialist an hour to arrive. Fenrych, who lives 30 miles south of London in the UK, said, "It went from this happy moment of seeing her for the first time to this abyss where we wondered what the issue might be."

The consultant told the couple that the child had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a condition where the left side of the organ is chronically under-developed and frequently described as missing.

The mother-to-be said she was "pushed" by a doctor to have a termination. But she and her partner are determined to see the pregnancy through.

Fenrych said the doctor wanted to have the baby terminated because she described the defect as terrible. We loved her. How could you suggest that immediately?

Two days later, they went to see a fetal cardiologist. He drew a diagram of Dorothea's heart on a piece of paper to explain the challenges. Fenrych said the physician warned them that continuing the pregnancy would mean a lifestyle change.

The consultant said that Dorothea would need to have her heart and veins rebuilt around three days after birth, and another three to six months later. He said that Dorothea would need a heart transplant when she was older. He noted in his records that patients with the same condition as Dorothea had a 60% chance of survival at the age of five.

Velez and Fenrych, who follow the Catholic faith, insisted that a terminated abortion was not on the table.

Fenrych asked the doctor if their daughter would be able to have a normal childhood. His answer was yes.

Fenrych told Insider that Velez, a partner in a start-up for healthcare funding, is a natural investigator. Fenrych said that the 17-year-old ballerina was inspiring and gave them hope.

Velez said doctors told them the non-genetic condition was a total fluke. They haven't told their child about the issue. Fenrych, a homeopath, said: "Dorothea will start kicking and she will give her kisses and sing songs."

8 weeks later, doctors dealt harsher news: Dorothea needs in-utero surgery to survive, and it can only be done in the US

As the weeks went by, Fenrych had a number of check-ups. A fetal echocardiogram showed a serious problem when she was 24 weeks pregnant.

The ultrasound scan of Dorothea taken during the 16th week of Fenrych's pregnancy detected the issues with her heart.
Dorothea's first ultrasound was performed 16 weeks into her mother's pregnancy and revealed the issues with her heart. Her parents were told by medical staff that,"half of her heart was "missing."Rob Velez

The overflow into her lungs was caused by a blocked heart. The doctors said that the only way to clear the obstruction was in-utero.

The fetal atrial septostomy had to be completed between weeks 28 and 32 of gestation. The medical experts wrote in their report that Dorothea has a 10% to 20% chance of reaching the age of five without intervention.

The doctors said that the surgery would increase her chance of survival to 87%.

Fenrych told Insider that it is not available in the UK.

It has not been taken completely away. The parents had a consultation with a leading fetal heart surgeon. She has done the operation many times. Morris worked with the couple's doctor in London and agreed to treat Dorothea in the US.

The in-utero surgery is performed with a needle inserted through the mother's belly and uterus, into the baby's heart

Morris said in the video that a balloon is inserted through the mother's belly into the unborn child's heart.

The babies can't push blood through their left ventricle. Morris said that they depend on a hole in the top chambers of their heart to get blood circulating.

We offer a procedure to open a hole in the heart.

Fenrych, who is 27 weeks pregnant, has less than six weeks to get the procedure done before Dorothea's lungs become too damaged for the treatment to be effective, according to her doctor.

The total cost of the in-utero surgery and the two operations after Dorothea was born is over three million dollars.

They are supported by the UK charity, Tree of Hope. The organization helps families raise money for medical treatments that are not covered by the National Health Service. The appeal for Dorothe has raised $9,700 and the goal is $2 million.

Fenrych said that the case has moved a lot of hearts.

She said that the love and support they have received is part of Dorothea's miracle.
