Orrin G. Hatch was the longest-serving Republican Senator and he died on Saturday at the age of 88.
The Orrin Hatch Foundation said that the former senator died in Salt Lake City surrounded by family but did not mention a cause.
Hatch is survived by his family.
Hatch helped shape nearly 12,000 pieces of legislation while serving as a president.
Hatch worked with Democrats on several legislative issues while he was a conservative.
In a divided nation, Orrin Hatch helped show us a better way by befriending both sides of the aisle. We would do well to follow his example. Hatch Foundation chairman A. Scott Anderson said in a statement that they should honor Orrin's memory by living as he lived.
Hatch helped build a conservative majority on the Supreme Court and championed several key GOP causes. He helped push through a major rewrite of the U.S. tax code while he was the chairman of the Senate Financial Committee. Hatch was backed to run for an eighth term, but decided to retire after Romney criticized Trump.
