After a heavy defeat at the Masters, Selby spoke openly about his struggles with mental health issues and considered not defending his title.

He said he had seen a little bit of improvement, which helped his decision to enter the World Championship but ultimately a difficult campaign ended without any silverware.

He is known for his determination, grinding down opponents in long drawn battles, but on this occasion he was on the receiving end of his mental and tactical fortitude.

The 22nd frame will go down in history, a lengthy exchange that ended withYan pinching it on the final black, securing the victory with a superb century.

The frame was one and a half hours.

He had a good chance to level at 11-11 but he missed the last pink and was nervous. I just needed one more chance after he gave me an easy chance.

Asked if he could go all the way and win the title, he said, "Maybe, who knows." I will win if I play like the last frame.

Yan is a great all-round player, you have to beat him, he doesn't give anything to you. He plays some very clever shots. I have a lot of respect for him.

I wish I was as good as he is. He has the game to win it for me. To not be scoring and not be at your best, you have to scrap it out.

After the first session of their second-round match, Judd Trump and Anthony McGill were tied at 4-4.

Trump and McGill each made a century in an otherwise boring encounter.

Neil Robertson and Jack Lisowski are both tied at 4-4 with both matches to resume on Sunday.
