A white Wisconsin man has been charged with a series of hate crimes. He is accused of violating the civil rights of several black and brown people to get them to leave his neighborhood. A criminal complaint has been filed against William McDonald for willfully injuring, intimidating, or interfering with another person's housing rights because of their race, color, or national origin. The claim states that McDonald, a resident of West Allis, left racist notes on the vehicles of his neighbors and wrote the N-word on the door of a woman's apartment. All the victims lived within a mile of the apartment complex where McDonald lived. The acts violate the Civil Rights Act of 1968 and are considered a hate crime by the feds. He slashed a woman's tires on her vehicle on March 7, 2021. The claim says that the windshield was broken the next day. McDonald left a note on the restaurant's stationary, saying, "BeTTER WATCH WHO THE F#K YOU SPEAK S**T TO!" I know where you are. If I see you again, I will kill you. Three additional victims, a couple and a child that lives with them, were intimidated with a note and had their tires slashed at the end of February 2022, just like the other three residents. Their letter told them to get out of their neighborhood. The family received their first note on Feb. 4. The couple's vehicle was vandalized. McDonald is accused of breaking the driver's side window. The FBI took up the case after the couple shared their concerns with the press. According to one of the victims, since February they had experienced about five incidents.
