Guy Lafleur was the next great Quebec-born player when he was selected by Montreal with the top pick in the 1971 NHL draft.

Hockey's new French Canadian icon was expected to be a dynamic forward with blonde locks that rippled in the wind as he glided up the ice before unleashing one of his bullet shots.

It took him a while to get there.

He worked through the pressure and became a player of his own.

A generation along the way.

Montreal won five Stanley Cup titles in the 1970s with the help of a Hall of Fame forward named Lafleur, who died of lung cancer at the age of 70.

Brendan Gallagher told reporters in Brossard that they are proud to wear the logo because of Guy Lafleur.

In 14 seasons with Montreal, Lafleur had 518 goals and 728 assists. In 1973, the flashy forward led the way, and the team went on to win it all four more times.

The organization was devastated according to the president.

Guy Lafleur had an exceptional career and was close to the Habs and hockey fans in Quebec, Canada and around the world. He was one of the best players in the organization and an ambassador for our sport.

Prime Minister Trudeau was a fan of Lafleur.

Trudeau said he was a hero to so many people.

The hockey world mourns Mike Bossy after the former New York Islanders forward and fellow Quebecer died last week at age 65 following his own battle with cancer.

Wayne Gretzky posted on his social media channels that he was honored to play with both of them.

Nicknamed "The Flower", LaFleur was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019.

The cancer was back in October 2020 after Lafleur had removed both the upper and lower parts of his lung.

In an interview with The Canadian Press in November, Lafleur said that the chemotherapy hurts you badly.

Yvan Cournoyer had trouble controlling his emotions.

Cournoyer said that he was a fighter.

He never gave up in his fight.

The Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988ducted Lafleur, who retired from the NHL in 1985 after Montreal denied his request for a trade. He played two more seasons with the Quebec Nordiques before hanging up his skates in 1991.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said you didn't need to see Guy Lafleur's name and number on his sweater.

One of the NHL's 100 greatest players of all-time, Lafleur finished with 793 assists and 560 goals in 1,126 games.

He holds the all-time record for assists and points. He scored at least 50 times in six straight campaigns.

Lafleur won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer three straight years from 1976 to 1978, the Hart Trophy as league's most valuable player in 1977 and 1978, and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff Most Valuable Player in 1977.

Guy was larger than life to me as a boy, and I respected him as a person. He will be missed.

Four of Lafleur's coronary arteries were completely blocked and a fifth was close to 90 percent blocked when he had his helicopter pilot's license renewed.

He had a third of his lung removed after the cancer was discovered.

A chain smoker up until those health scares, Lafleur had been partnering with the company to raise awareness about lung cancer detection.

Lafleur said in an interview that there were people that were still alive.

After his cancer diagnosis and the COVID-19 epidemic, Lafleur hadn't been out in public much in recent years, but he received a thunderous applause at the Bell Centre during Montreal's improbable victory.

He had his number retired by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Lafleur said in November that he had been mostly stuck in the house. I want to get out of this with a victory.

It is the hope for everyone that has cancer.
