Oldham pitch invasion
Supporters stormed the pitch at Oldham's Boundary Park to protest against the club's owners

The protest against the ownership forced the abandonment of the match against Salford City and delayed the impending drop from the English Football League.

The Latics, who needed to avoid defeat to keep their hopes of League Two survival alive after wins for both Barrow and Stevenage, trailed 2-0 with 11 minutes to play against Salford when fans poured on to the field.

The players were taken off by referee Robert Madeley as supporters staged a sit-in against owner Abdallah Lemsagam and remained in place.

Fans were told the game had been abandoned, and that there would be no reaction from the former Latics player and his brother.

The EFL has been contacted by the BBC.

Latics' fall from grace

It would be a huge fall from grace for a club who were founding members of the premier league, League cup and Wembley FA cup as recently as 1994.

They are set to become the first side from the top tier since 1992 to leave the league when they begin their first season in non-league on the 30th anniversary of the division's creation.

This is a pitch invasion for the wrong reasons. Andy Ritchie, who was a part of the early 1990s success, told the radio station that they have had them for the right reasons.

This doesn't help anything. I know the fans are frustrated. You can change ownership in a different way.

You don't stop a football game, you wait until the game is over. You should show your emotions if you have to. They can do it better.

It looks like there is trouble outside the ground as well. It is a sad day for the football club. I don't want to see this.

The club has had a miserable spell in recent times.

When he arrived at Boundary Park, the new Latics coach looked set to inspire some hope.

Fans would be forgiven for thinking that he could turn around the fortunes of a club who have slumped to their lowest point in recent memory.

It took seven games for the club to get their first win of the season.

Curle left just eight months into his tenure, amid heightened tensions with the club's support.

Three fans were banned in December for promoting their dislike of the club, with one of them branding it a dictatorship.

The damage was done when the bans were overturned just two days later after a public outcry.

Less than a month later, Lemsagam announced that he was willing to sell the club, a U-turn on the position he had taken in September 2021, when he claimed he did not want to.

He has been accused of late payment of salaries and threats of player strikes, as well as the prospect of administration, which was avoided.

After more than a month without a permanent manager, he arrived in January for his sixth stint at the club.

Despite a bright run of form in February which took them out of the League Two drop zone, as well as two successive wins in March and April, nine defeats in the past 11 games before Saturday saw a slide into trouble.

The game itself

The points were needed to keep the play-off hopes alive.

Brandon Thomas-Asante's first-half headed goal gave the visitors a 2-0 lead, but the home side were able to score from the penalty spot.

With pressure mounting, Oldham went for the goal they needed to delay the drop, but Tom King saved their tame chip after Jamie Hopcutt's goal was ruled out.
