A contract is not as important as what will really happen when it comes to a consultant role with Manchester United, says Ralf Rangnick.

The interim manager told the media that the club cannot make any changes but need open heart surgery to cure their issues.

While he feels that the best coach available to United was the Dutch, he stressed that the only way that the Dutchman can succeed is if he is willing to remake the team in the right way.

Here is the transcript of the exchange.

Is it right to describe Paul Pogba as enigmatic?

Right now he is injured, so it doesn't make sense to talk about that. He won the World Cup with France. He has the potential to be a good player. Like a lot of other players, he was struggling to get his best performances on the pitch. This was the case throughout the season and in the last few weeks. This was the case in the past.

Rangnick says Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Scott McTominay are all available against Arsenal this weekend. But, Paul Pogba is likely to miss the rest of the season

Why?

It is difficult to say. It would have been easier to change that if I knew that. Right now, it doesn't make sense to think about that. He will not be available for the game tomorrow and will not be available for the other four games. He will not be renewing his contract. It is most likely that he will not be here next season.

More high-profile and decorated coaches have failed at this club. The board and you believe he can succeed where they have failed.

He is a good character to start with. I have heard from people who have worked with him that he is very personable and carries himself well. He needs the help of all the people inside the club. I think he will get that.

Gary Neville has his say on the appointment of Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager

He will hopefully have the chance to mold a new team with the scouting department and the board. The most important thing for me is that the club manages to get in the right players, change the attitude, and have positive energy for the new team. This is important for the new manager. We talked about other clubs that were in the same situation as Manchester United five to six years ago.

This could be one of the few good things about the season, if the right lessons are learned from what has happened. We know what kind of screws we need to change. Why shouldn't United be as successful as those clubs are now? It is not just the manager's quality. The other things that brought the club into position are being changed.

Is it possible to be patient?

It has to do with the level of expectations and also with patience. It is hard to tell people to be patient in a club like Manchester United. It will take some time. We have to face the situation. We lost on aggregate against the Reds. We lost 6-1 against Manchester city. The team was defeated by a score of 4-1. We lost to a team that was not full of confidence. We have to acknowledge that this is a sad reality and that it will help Manchester United in the future.

Do you still want to be involved with Manchester United next season after what you have gone through?

We have an agreement on that role, but in the end, it is not a question of what has been written on paper or what has been agreed upon, it is about what will really happen in everyday life and business. It is also important how the man sees that. Does he like talking to people like me? How close is he to each other? Those are the things we have not talked about yet.

I am not worried about that at all. It is not a question of having agreed upon a contract or anything for the next two years, it is a question of how much Ten Hag and the board of Manchester United really want.

Rangnick discusses the new managerial appointment of Erik ten Hag and just what the Dutchman can bring to Old Trafford

After five and a half months, I still have a feeling with this club, I still see what kind of options we have, what kind of space for improvement there is, and where we could develop.

Having seen what happened in other clubs and having spoken about the progress of the club, why should this not be possible here? This is one of the biggest clubs in the world, we have perfect training conditions, we have a fantastic stadium, and the fan support is the best I have ever experienced. This is amazing. I would want to be involved in that process. I don't know if this can happen and how appreciated it is.

Do you think United will stick with Ten Hag if the next 12 months are rough?

I can only tell you what I have seen and heard so far, and that is that Erik is a very good choice. He has shown that before. I think he is the best coach you can get right now. One of the few good things is that you don't need glasses to see where the problems are and it's crystal clear.

Erik ten Hag arrives at Ajax training after being announced as the new Manchester United manager

How do we solve them? It is not enough to do little amendments and little issues here and there. In medicine, this would be an operation at the open heart. There are more changes to be made than there are small changes. It makes sense if everyone knows that this has to happen and if people want to work together.

I still believe that it is not necessary to change those things for two or three years. This can happen within a year, and other clubs have shown that it can happen in less than four years. It is possible in one, two, or three transfer windows.

Strong leadership is required on and off the pitch.

This isn't something that only one person can do as a manager. I am pretty sure that they did not do all the things themselves. In order to rebuild, there were other people involved in those two clubs, top people in certain positions. To build how we want here, you have to have top people and they have to work together in a very reliable way.
