NFL will play two afternoon games and a prime-time contest on Christmas Day for 1st time

The Christmas Day falling on a Sunday will be used by the NFL.

The league will have three games on December 25th, two in the afternoon on CBS and Fox, and a prime-time game on NBC. Mike North, the vice president of broadcasting for the National Football League, revealed the tripleheader on a Buffalo Bills sideline reporter's show.

The league has played on Christmas in the past. The Green Bay victory over Cleveland averaged 28.6 million viewers on Fox, making it the third most watched game of the season. The Indianapolis win at Arizona averaged over 12 million viewers, making it the second-highest-viewed game in network history.

The league will have a regular Thursday night game in December. There will be 11 games on December 24. The week will end with a Monday night game on December 26.

There have been 24 Christmas Day games in the National Football League. The most famous game on that day is Miami's 27-24 double overtime victory over Kansas City.

The NBA has long had the day to itself, and the three games of the NFL will put it in direct competition. For the past 14 seasons, the NBA has played five games on December 25.

The holiday falls on a Monday this year, so the NFL will play at least two Christmas games.

The Christmas games will be revealed the week of May 9. The complete schedule will be released on May 12. The first Thursday Night Football game on Prime Video will be unveiled during the first round of the NFL draft on April 28, and the international games on May 4.
