Billy Milliken warned his daughter's boyfriend that he would have to spend two days alone on his private island if he wanted Milliken's blessing before proposing marriage.

Milliken's is not a private island. There is no white sand beaches, no palm trees, or a cabana boy to fetch cocktails with tiny umbrellas in this area.

The Washington Post has a newsletter for important and interesting stories.

There is an outdoor shower, a shanty of an outhouse and electricity produced by a suitcase generator.

Milliken had a personal prohibition on cellphones.

He said that they were going to spend some time on the island alone.

His daughter and her boyfriend got married last year. He is expecting a child in July.

You can now own all of the island. Duck Ledges Island is being sold for $339,000. Milliken built a 540-square-foot cottage on top of the land in Wohoa Bay. For the past 15 years, the island has served as a refuge, sanctuary, vacation home, gathering place and recreation spot whenever he wanted to escape his office or home in nearby Jonesport. He loves the island because it inspired him when he was alone and it helped create a community when he brought others with him. Milliken hasn't gone there as much as he would have liked over the last couple of years, but now wants to pass along its charms.

He came to own Duck Ledges Island because he came to own everyone.

Milliken accidentally bought it in 2007. He was trying to sell the island to the previous owner as a real estate agent. While heading there with a prospective buyer on Milliken's boat - the only way to access the island - the guy started transferring a cache of weapons from one of two duffel bags he'd brought with him to an array of pockets on his person.

Milliken peeked in the guy's second duffel bag while on the island. The guy put the weapons in his pockets on the way back, but not all of them. He bragged to Milliken that he could use one of his throwing stars to cut off a duck's head.

Milliken said that he was trying to be cool and liked.

Even though he offered to pay the list price, the owner refused to sell because he was afraid that the throwing-star guy would kill a bunch of wildlife.

He asked Milliken why he didn't buy it.

Milliken noted that he intended to flip the property for double what he paid. He didn't expect something to happen. Milliken fell in love with the island as he transformed a structure that had been moldering on the island into a 540 square foot cottage. He brought people out for lobster bakes or campfire nights and they loved it.

Money problems forced Milliken to sell the island. The man who made a respectable offer but complained about all the things it didn't have was rejected by his predecessor. The man who passed Milliken's test spent time on a similar island as a kid and wanted to give that experience to others.

Milliken said that he shared the same passion for the island as they did.

The man decided to becomepartners in ownership with Milliken, who has been maintaining the property for more than a decade.

Milliken said they have shared the island with his friends and random people. It has brought a lot of good for our hearts.

He bought the island back in 2019.

Milliken wants to build a home on an 11-acre property he owns in Maine that he can live in year round. He wants to sell the island to someone who can use it.

I hope the future owner gets a fraction of the joy that I have had, he said.

Milliken has another requirement for any would-be buyer: They have to stay at least one night on the island to see if they can hack it. No one can go to the island from the last week in October through late May, unless you want to die by freezing or get hurt, and Milliken said that has held up any possible sale.

He is waiting until he can show people what he is doing.

He said that sometimes you think you are Davy Crockett, but really you are Betty Crocker.

Milliken said the rewards are worth it. Those who follow the Milliken rule leave their cellphones on the mainland, and there are few things to distract them. He said that there are so many red herrings that distract us.

He said there was nowhere to hide and that you would find yourself out there.

Milliken tried to describe the experience for those who have never been before: He has been out there in the dark, the waves crashing, seals barking, and night sky stretching until it drooped and surrounded him. He was a tiny man in the middle of the ocean.

He said that it makes you feel small.
