  • I moved to South Africa two years ago after living in the US my whole life.

  • I was surprised by the power cuts and car guards.

  • I had to learn how to swim in cold water.

I moved to South Africa two years ago and thought I knew what to expect.

I had traveled to almost 30 countries and thought moving abroad would be easy.

I had to get used to a few things after moving to South Africa.

Finding eggs at the grocery store was a struggle

It took me over 10 minutes to find eggs in South Africa, because they were not where I thought they would be.

Eggs in the US are washed before they are sold and need to be refrigerated.

Most people in South Africa keep their eggs in a cupboard or on the counter.

Before I moved to South Africa, I thought a braai was a lot like a barbecue — it's not

We barbecue a few times a year in New Jersey. Braais are a type of barbecue in South Africa.

A major difference is that of South Africans cooking over a fire. I was used to eating burgers and hotdogs at home.

I get invited to more than one Braais each month, and they are a great place to gather.

Meat has become a snack to me

I am no longer surprised if my South African friends stock up on meat before we go on a road trip.

Dry sausage is more popular in the US than biltong, a cured meat snack. They are also better in my opinion.

I had to get used to temporarily living without power on a regular basis

The power went off in my entire neighborhood when I was living alone in an apartment.

It turns out that this was a series of rolling power cuts that were usually two-and-a-half hours long and occur more than once a day. Loadshedding began in South Africa in 2007.

Nightclub goers dance in the dark, businesses without generators are not open, and the world is pretty quiet.

The cold water grew on me

The water in Cape Town is very cold.

The average sea temperature in the vicinity is 13 degrees Celsius to 17 degrees Celsius, which is about 55 degrees Fahrenheit to 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

I quickly learned to love swimming in it because Capetonians still love to do it. I began to crave that cold water. I try to swim in one of Cape Town's beautiful tidal pools at least once a week.

It took me a bit to get used to people guarding my car

When I bought my first car in Cape Town after six months in the country, I was already used to the sudden appearance of the smiling, reflective-vest-wearing car guards, but their presence at my car window still surprised me.

Self-appointed car guards direct drivers into parking spaces and ask for money in exchange for watching vehicles while the drivers are gone.

In South Africa, tipping car guards R5 or R10 after they help you park, direct your car out of the parking lot, or carry your groceries is a rule.

As a New Jersey girl, I have never been willing to let anyone help me with anything.

For a place so diverse it's nicknamed the Rainbow Nation, interracial dating isn't as common as I thought

My partner is a South African of Indian descent, and when we are out shopping or waiting for a table at a restaurant, it is assumed we are not together. It doesn't surprise me anymore.

It would have been against the law to be a couple less than 40 years ago in South Africa. We would have had to hide, face arrest, or be forced to leave the country if we were together.

Even though interracial dating is legal, it is still not common, and racial groups often remain apart.

I know many more interracial couples at home than we do here.

There are a lot of safety precautions I had to learn to follow

South Africa has some of the highest crime and murder rates in the world and it took me a long time to get used to it.

Many people in my hometown don't lock their doors and most don't have security gates. Black bears getting into our trash bins was our biggest safety concern.

My home in South Africa has barred windows, security cameras, beams, and panic buttons.

I have to keep my windows up, lock my car doors, and make sure nothing is left in the car when I drive.

I no longer drive alone late at night or hike alone without a group, but I still enjoy those things.

Baboons and penguins are my neighbors

The local baboons are not as threatening as the black bears in my hometown are. They like to steal fruit or drink milk from the fridge.

Some of the only African penguins in the world live 20 minutes from my home.

African penguins live in southern Africa in South Africa, where their numbers are decreasing, but I always thought of penguins living in the cold of the South Pole.

African penguins make great beach buddies because they swim next to you in the surf or waddle up to you.

African penguins became one of my favorite animals, and Boulders Beach became my happy place.

I also got used to someone else cleaning my home

Gardeners, maids, or nannies can only be hired by the wealthy in New Jersey.

Extra help around the house is more common in South Africa. I stay in a home that has a gardener that comes twice a month and a maid that comes twice a week.

It took me a while to get used to someone else cleaning my room since I have never hired anyone to do that for me.
