Nancy Pelosi called Kevin McCarthy after he rejected the mask mandate.

HuffPostHuffPost

Kevin McCarthy's denial fell apart in record time.

McCarthy denied a New York Times report that he told other lawmakers he would call for Donald Trump to resign after the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Audio released by the Times shows otherwise.

In a phone call with GOP leaders, he said that he would recommend that he resign if impeachment was to pass.

I don't know if Trump will take his advice, but I don't think he will.

The new book by Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin was used in the Times report.

In a statement earlier in the day, McCarthy called the report false and wrong, and his spokesman told the Times that McCarthy never said he'd call Trump to say he should resign.

The audio from the Republican leadership call was obtained by Burns and Martin.
