Nathan McAtee, 18, is charged with first-degree felony aggravated murder in the stabbing death of his brother Joseph McAtee, 11, at this apartment building on Cloverleaf Road in Windham Village early Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, Southeast Intermediate School, where Joseph had been a fifth grader, is dealing with the shock of his death.

A man with a shaky voice told a sheriff's dispatch that he killed his brother.

The recording of the call lasted more than two minutes and was provided by the sheriff's office. The male hung up the phone 45 seconds into the call when he didn't know his name or address. During the last 100 seconds of the call, the sheriff's dispatch informs the police that the call was traced to 9538 Cloverleaf Road.

A man is charged with murder in the death of his brother.

Nathan A. McAtee is accused of killing his brother, Joseph, in an apartment at that address on Tuesday. Joseph was stabbed in the back, neck, and stomach according to a complaint filed by the police. The apartment is identified in the complaint as belonging to Nathan McAtee.

The person said that he stabbed him three times, once in the back and twice in the throat. I will turn myself in.

The male is not heard again as he hangs up the phone.

Two minutes after that call, another man made a call to the dispatch center. Someone was stabbed to death and the caller begged the dispatch to send someone to the address.

"Come on, please," he said.

The dispatch tells him that the police are on their way.

A $1 million bond was set for Nathan McAtee on Wednesday. There will be a second hearing on Friday.

Herschel McAtee wrote on the Record-Courier's Facebook page that he is a schizophrenic. He used to be my baby.

Kevin Bailey wrote that it breaks his heart that his brother and nephew died that day.

The men didn't respond to the offer to talk about what happened.

Southeast school district 'reeling'

The district's leader said on Thursday that Joseph was a fifth graders at Southeast Intermediate School.

I tried to get some collective voices from teachers, the school counselor, and the principal about Joey, and they all said he was very happy. He was trying to get some ideas for gifts for them, which I think speaks to his generosity.

Joseph is thought to have started in the district in second grade. Joseph was still a student at Southeast even though he was moving to a new school.

Joseph was a happy, well-adjusted student who loved his school and loved his teachers and was always looking for opportunities to tell a joke, and he enjoyed playing the card game Uno, playing with his friends in the school cafeteria during lunch.

The last day of school for Joseph was April 13.

It has been hard for the students and staff at Southeast. It has been an emotional week for us. We were not made aware of the situation until Tuesday morning, which was our first day back from spring break. Having to share that information with students and staff has been very difficult.

A second jury found a man guilty of murder in the case of a key witness.

The district has had two tragedies in the last five or six years and has developed a plan of action with a crisis team and staff helping.

It always adds layers when you don't expect it to happen, and so it has been a big shock, but I'm really proud that our Pirate family has come together. This one has a different shock value to it and is difficult to process for kids. It is hard for the students and adults to process and it seems pointless. We are still trying to understand it.

In the ninth grade, Nathan McAtee was a student in the district. He withdrew from the 10th grade and did not know what happened to him after that. He wasn't asked to comment further about him.

He said that they would like to continue providing support for the family in the future.
