Travelers who are uneasy about flying without a mask may be able to get their money back if they cancel a trip with United.

United CEO Scott Kirby told The Today Show on Thursday that the airline is prepared to give refunds or flight credits to customers who no longer want to fly after a federal judge struck down the mask mandate. Since the ruling, several airlines have made masks optional for flyers.

Kirby said that all of the customers should feel free to wear a mask.

Josh Freed told Insider that travelers don't need a reason to change or cancel their flight if they want a credit or refund. He said that these customers should call customer service to find a good answer.

Freed did not specifically confirm a refund will be an option in all cases, but emphasized that most ticket types allow customers to apply their fare to travel through the end of the year.

Changes are not allowed on basic economy tickets. They can either be canceled for a fee with the remaining balance kept as flight credit, or upgraded to standard economy for a fee and then changed, The Points Guy reported.

Many travelers are concerned about the safety of maskless flights, but Kirby doesn't think the mandate will return any time soon.

Several consumers took to social media to complain about the policy.

Benjamin Venesss, a Psychiatrist, said that wearing an N95 on planes and in other enclosed public spaces helps protect yourself and others from Covid-19.

Dr. Emily Ricotta, a Baltimore-based epidemiologist, said she was double-masking on her Thursday flight.

Kirby told Today that planes and airports are two of the safest places to be because of the effective air filters. Customers who don't want to fly will be given options.
