The first group of Apple store workers in the US filed for a union election.

Over 70% of the store's 100 employees signed union authorization cards in order to move forward with formal recognition. The Communications Workers of America is the union that represents the body.

Apple will have to recognize the bargaining unit if more than 50% of employees vote to unionize. It looks like the Georgia store will be Apple's first retail union if the current numbers stay constant until the election.

Apple is a great place to work, but we know that the company can better live up to their ideals and so we are excited to be joining together with our coworkers to make this even better place to work.

The union said in a statement that retail workers at Apple have been denied a living wage, cost of living adjustments or equitable stock options. Wages range between $20 and $30 per hour, with some Apple stock. Apple retail workers have access to healthcare.

Apple's Grand Central Terminal store took steps to form a union earlier this week. The New York-based employees of the Fruit Stand Workers United launched a website to educate their fellow workers about why they want to unionize.

The cost of living in New York City has not kept pace with wages. Retail workers should live precariously.
