Lawyers for the 13 sexual assault survivors of Larry Nassar said Thursday that they are seeking $10 million from the FBI.
The government is responsible for assaults that took place after July 2015. The FBI made fundamental errors when it became aware of allegations against Nassar, according to the Justice Department's inspector general.
Nassar was a doctor at both Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. He is serving decades in prison for attacking female athletes.
Jamie White said that the case was not about fake money or tax evasion.
He said that Nassar continued his reign of terror for 17 months.
An email was sent to the FBI.
White's clients aren't suing the FBI yet. Federal law requires that a claim be filed with a government agency, which has six months to reply. Depending on the FBI's response, a lawsuit could follow.
Grace French, founder of a group called The Army of Survivors, said that no one should have been attacked after the summer of 2015.
The massacre at the high school in Florida was noted by White. The FBI received a tip about five weeks before 17 people were killed at the school, but never forwarded it to their South Florida office. The families of those killed or injured will be paid $127 million by the government.
The inspector general is looking into allegations that the FBI failed to address complaints against Nassar. It took months for agents to open a formal investigation.
More than 100 women were attacked after July 2015, according to White. Nassar was not arrested by state authorities until November 2016 after an investigation by Michigan State University police.
The FBI director apologized for the delays in the prosecution of Nassar.
Federal prosecutors in Grand Rapids filed a child pornography case against Nassar.
More than 300 women and girls were victims of sexual assault at Michigan State University. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympian Committee reached a settlement.
