President Joe Biden said the United States would send another $800 million in security and economic aid to Ukraine as it fights off a renewed Russian assault.
Biden said from the Roosevelt Room that the government can use the money to help the economy and to support the people of Ukraine.
Western intelligence warns of an intensified Russian offensive in eastern and southern Ukraine after weeks of stalling ground advances on the capital city of Kyiv.
Biden met with Shmyhal at the White House to discuss the new security package.
Biden said that he would send a supplemental budget request to Congress next week.
Biden's remarks come on the heels of a Wednesday afternoon meeting with his military commanders and national security officials for assessments on global threats as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Ahead of the meeting, Biden said the U.S. security assistance is flowing into the region daily and that allies are stepping up.

More than 100,000 U.S. troops have been sent to NATO member countries since the beginning of the year.
According to the White House, the U.S. has provided more than $3 billion to Ukraine since the beginning of Biden's presidency.
More than 140 warships and 130 aircraft have been placed on heightened alert by the NATO alliance. The strong group warned Putin that an attack on one NATO member state would be seen as an attack on all.
Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania are NATO allies of Ukraine.
