Don Kory has 600 acres on either side of Shut-Ins State Park. 15 years ago, the farm was turned into a nightmare.

The culprit? The hogs are wild.

Kory said that they destroy everything.

Kory tended gardens on his farm. Kory said that hogs would remake the land if they were allowed to.

Kory asked what happens when pigs come in. We gave up on gardens because you couldn't have them anymore.

Kory called the Missouri Feral Hog Elimination Partnership to tell them there were pigs on his property.

Kory said he would have told them they were nuts if they had told him.

Kory started gardening again after the COVID-19 Pandemic hit. He built a corral to keep the hogs out.

Kory said that they came right out and tried to get through to the garden, but they didn't get in.

The garden is thriving now, but Kory's diligence against the hogs remains constant.

Kory said that he didn't retire to become a pig trapper.

Traps, infrared cameras, drones have helped find sounders

More than 15 federal and state agencies are part of the Missouri Feral Hog Elimination Partnership.

The partnership has killed more than 50,000 hogs since the beginning of the year. In 2020, there were over 12,700 hogs killed. 10 full-time trappers are employed by the partnership along with the University of Missouri Extension Program.

During a field day with the partnership in early April, Kory told them to keep going. In 18 months or two years, they will be back to where they were and 10 years of hard labor is wasted.

The strategy to allow hunters to tackle the invaders on their own was not working according to the incident commander.

The hog-hunting culture developed around the message that we delivered to shoot a hog on site, according to Jensen.

There are diseases carried by wild hogs on land. Officials aim for elimination of species.

The strategy changed in 2016 Jensen said the Corps closed its public land to hog hunting after the MDC re-evaluated its messaging. The forest was closed to hog hunting in 2020. There are exceptions. If you have an unfilled deer or turkey tag, you can take a feral hog on Mark Twain and MDC property. Private property can be used to hunt hogs.

There is a lot of art in trapping pigs, according to Jensen.

The technology is used to create the art. He is a USDA wildlife Biologist and a drone pilot. He pilots the drones to look for sounders and herds of pigs. It helps with helicopter hunts.

In a two-and-a-half-hour drone flight at night, I can scout thousands of acres where it would take months to go in there and bait and look for cameras or walk the mountain on foot and look for signs.

There are limits to what can be done with drones. Miller said that the drones are grounded if it is too windy.

The cameras are helping as well, Jensen said.

Most of the traps we use are mechanically activated, but we are using technology to our advantage.

Bill addressed feral hog problems

Jeff Reed has 4,000 acres of row farmland in Williamsville. The farm raised pigs for a few decades. He noticed damage to his crops a decade ago. The problem exploded.

Reed has seen a decrease in the number of hogs on his property thanks to the efforts of the trappers.

The Missouri Legislature passed House Bill No. , which redefined the penalties for transporting and releasing swine. The bill specifically prevented the criminalization of accidental escapes, transportation of domestic hogs, farming or raising domestic hogs.

Reed used to allow people to shoot hogs on his land, but those methods were stopped by the addition of trappers. Sounders used to spot a truck approaching and take off.

When a truck comes across a field and sets a trap to catch them all at once, they are not wigged out, Reed said during the field day.

Reed said he has mixed feelings about closing the national forests to hunting for hogs, but in the past couple of years, he has seen a shift from officials to mend relationships with the owners.

There have been a lot of hogs killed on Reed's property.

Can you eat feral hogs?

There are a number of reasons why the hogs are not recommended to be eaten.

There are at least three diseases that have been found in hog samples in Missouri.

  • There is a disease that can be spread among swine. According to the CDC, swine carry thesebacteria for life. If this disease is not diagnosed and treated quickly, it can cause long-term health problems and even death.

  • The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service states that pseudorabies can affect cattle, dogs, cats, sheep, and goats. There are reproductive problems, respiratory problems, and occasional deaths in hogs that are caused by the Pseudorabies virus.

  • The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service says that the disease of pigs is called classic swine fever. The immune status of the herd, the age of the pig, and the strain of the virus affect the severity of the illness.
