Apple must pay a man more than $1,000 for not including a power adapter with his new iPhone, judge rules
  • A judge ordered Apple to pay a man $1,000 for failing to include a power accessory with his purchase.

  • He ruled that the company was making customers buy two of its products so that one would work.

  • The judge rejected Apple's claim that the cable can be used with non-Apple products.

A judge in Brazil ordered Apple to pay a consumer over $1,000 for not having a power adapter with his new phone.

The practice of a "tie sale" is when a company requires a customer to buy two products in order for one of them to work.

The judge said that Apple had forced the consumer to purchase a second product of its exclusive manufacture, calling it an illegal commercial practice.

According to the court documents, Apple said that each phone comes with a Lightning cable that lets consumers charge their phones using power they can buy from other companies.

The judge said that the cable doesn't work with wall mounts that don't have ausb-c port.

He noted that Apple stopped providing the power adapter out of concern for the environment and that there was a shortage of the accessory. Pinheiro said that Apple is still manufacturing and selling its power adapters.

Pinheiro said that it was not appropriate that such a measure seeks to reduce environmental impacts since the defendants continued to manufacture such an essential accessory.

The Brazilian government said Apple was abusive when it said it would stop providing power to the iPhone 12 in 2020. The tech giant was fined $2 million for not demonstrating the environmental gain that it had advertised, according to Brazilian outlet G1.

Apple did not reply immediately.
