It is embarrassing that my Republican colleagues don't have the guts to stand up to the governor, who has thrown childish tantrum after childish, all in an attempt to boost his own political prospects.

Republicans said that the map was a compromise measure and that the governor has a legitimate role to play.

If we failed to pass a map, we would not be held responsible, said state Sen. Ray Rodrigues (R-Estero).

Florida gained one congressional seat due to population growth, for a total of 28. The map that was approved by the Legislature last month would have increased the GOP advantage by two seats. The legislation was unconstitutional because it would have preserved a Jacksonville-area district in which a Black candidate was likely to get elected.

The Senate approved a map that could lead to a flip of the seat in the Tampa Bay area currently held by Charlie Crist. The district held by Murphy would become a GOP-friendly one.

The Florida House is expected to send the map to the governor by Thursday. The map is in violation of federal voting laws and Florida's anti-gerrymandering standards, which were approved by voters, according to Democratic-aligned groups.
