The music team went to the weekend one of the festival. Seeing Harry Styles was one of the highlights. Traffic and apathetic crowds were negative aspects of the experience. We got to see Harry Styles perform for the first time. Harry Styles was our favorite performer over the weekend. He started the show with his new song, "As It Was," sang two duets with his friend, and got a crowd at the festival. It was Styles first time on the festival stage, but you never would have known it. He was enthusiastic and confident from every sequin. The feel of the festival was influenced by the topography. There is a reason why you should go to Coachella. It is difficult to look around at mountains and palm trees in a straight line. The skyline of Indio, California is simply magical and can be seen when compared to the festival's signature Ferris wheel and art installations. Many artists performed new songs. It is an honor and career milestone for many musicians to join the legendary lineup. One way to make their performances feel special is to give fans a taste of new music. The first weekend in April tends to kick off the festival season at a time when many artists are about to release their summer singles or full-length projects. Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat both released new songs this year, while Styles performed two tracks from his upcoming album. Artists can bring out other musicians during their performances at the festival. An unexpected appearance is another way to make a performance feel special. This is a strategy that has been embraced by the performers at the festival. Styles and Eilish paid homage to their predecessors by bringing out Twain and Albarn. Doja, who welcomed Tyga for "Freaky Deaky" and Rico Nasty for "Tia Tamera", as well as Daniel Caesar, who was joined by JUST BEACON for a low, were all asked to perform their hit duets. It was enjoyable to see a surprise appearance by Arlo Parks. Bridgers and Parks haven't released any songs together, so when Parks joined Bridgers onstage to sing "I Know the End" and "Graceland Too" it was a genuine surprise and thrill. We could tell that both women were having fun. More dedicated fans can easily make their way to the front of the daytime crowd. People would pack together and push to the front for the headliners, but it wasn't true for earlier shows. Many audiences were more sparse and relaxed than we thought, probably because there are so many artists to see and everyone is spread out. We were able to get close to celebrated artists like Arcade Fire and Japanese Breakfast without much effort. The majority of the sets started and ended on time. There is a well-oiled machine at the festival. The artists arrived on time for most of the weekend. Fans had little time to wait in between performances because the festival crew was able to dismantle sets and build new ones quickly. Doja fans only had to wait 40 minutes after Karol G left the stage, despite the complex set design. Doja Cat's show was proof that she is ready for headliners. TikTok's favorite songs sound better and more addictive live. The punk-rock version of Doja's No. 1 smash "Say So" convinced us she was born to make the next Live Through This. Doja gave fans a true performance, complete with costume changes and elaborate choreography. A girl in red gave a performance that led to a stage dive. No one would have been able to tell if the girl in red had said anything. Her energy levels were up from the very first time she hit the stage, and she continued to give a passionate performance of her hits. Despite being warned against it, she transformed into a rock star by shredding her guitar and capping off her set with some crowd surfing. There isn't enough people to stage dive. She decided to give it a try even though she said she was not going to do it. The finale took the experience up several levels, making it one of the best sets of the weekend. The best performance of the weekend was given byMaggie Rogers. Sunday was the hottest day of the weekend, the crowd was fully exposed to the sun, and people were exhausted. All of those issues faded into the background after she spoke. Rogers delivered an inspired mashup ofRetrograde and Whitney Houston's "I wanna Dance With Somebody" and commanded the stage with ease. Everything about Rogers was electric. Your spot in the crowd can affect your experience at a concert. The audience that showed up for Rogers on Sunday was the best we had ever seen. Everyone around us was fully immersed in the experience, shouting every word and chanting at one point. Maggie! Between tracks. When she announced the final song, it came as a genuine shock because we were so engaged with the performance. She was not given a full hour onstage. There is a lot of traffic while you arrive at the festival, and not many signs to point you in the right direction. Some of the traffic we encountered was baffling, but it depends on when you try to arrive at the festival. Fans are told not to trust the gps and to follow their directions. There isn't much in the way of signs when approaching the grounds. If you come from the wrong direction, you may find yourself driving in circles, constantly diverted by traffic cones, and lines of cars with no end in sight. After leaving Palm Springs at 2 p.m., it took us 90 minutes to get to a parking lot. Although we have heard good things about the shuttle service, it only operates from local hotels that sell out quickly. A weekend pass for the shuttle will cost you $84, plus fees. It can be difficult to use ride-hailing apps. One festivalgoer was forced to wait for over an hour after trying to call an app. She begged a friend to pick her up after she gave up. The worst part of the experience was walking to and from the parking lot. Renting a car made sense for our budget and schedule. We did not know how bad the parking would be. It took at least 20 minutes to get inside the festival after we left the car. It felt like an eternity in the heat with blisters on our feet. After a long day of walking and dancing, returning to the car was even worse since the headliners didn't finish until around 1 a.m. We were drained by then. Both of us developed blisters on our feet over the weekend. The festival grounds are so large that attendees need to walk a lot. When you spend three days on your feet in a row, it's inevitable that you will get blisters, but the odds of getting one go way up. We developed blisters on the bottom of our feet throughout the weekend, so the only day we weren't in pain was Friday. We stopped at a store on Saturday morning to buy Band-Aids, Ibuprofen, and gel for our shoes to help ease the pain. We were able to do this because we were driving to the festival each day, and if we were camping on-site, we would have suffered. The dust is not a joke. We saw a TikTok video of a woman advising festivalgoers to bring a face covering and a Neti pot because the dust is not a little game. The grounds were covered in grass when we got there and we thought the dust wouldn't be a problem. The path back to the parking lot was very dusty at night. After making the long trek back to our car every evening, we would spend the entire 45 minute drive to our home in Palm Springs coughing and sneezing. The lineup has a lot of artists. One day before the festival was scheduled to start, the set times were not released. Several artists were scheduled for the same time on different stages: girl in red and Rina Sawayama; Kim Petras, Finneas, and Orville Peck; Japanese Breakfast and Arlo Parks; and Denzel Curry and Holly. It was easy to justify the high cost of attendance because of the promise of great performances. We were only able to see a fraction of what we wanted. The crowd's apathetic attitude was a major mood-killer. It is billed as more than a music festival, it is an experience at the intersection of fashion, celebrity, and art. There are a lot of people who aren't singing and dancing. From the beginning, this apathy was obvious to us. At several shows, we were surrounded by people who were either immobile or very busy, even when we were very close to the stage. During Bridgers emotional performance, many people in the audience were talking all the way through her songs to the point where people on social media noticed the volume of their conversations. One person said that he would have lost his shit if the people were talking through this. We knew the desert would be hot, but it was. Callie has been to many music festivals. I was prepared for a sweaty experience because they almost always take place in the summer. The heat at the festival was very different. The sunlight felt oppressive. It was difficult to walk across the field without getting exhausted, and I drank five or more bottles of water a day, but I felt unwell. We experienced major temperature whiplash when the sun went down. We know this is how the desert works, but it got much colder at night. Given the heat during the day, it was difficult to bring a jacket. The festival removed vaccine and COVID test requirements. Although experts say the risk of contracting COVID in an outdoor setting is far lower, the densely packed crowds at Coachella seem to negate that benefit. It would have made us a lot more comfortable if we knew that our fellow patrons had recently tested negative for the deadly virus. It doesn't seem like adding one more checkpoint would cause much trouble since there are already several. The Weeknd didn't arrive until after Swedish House Mafia performed a full set. It was Sunday night. We were tired. We were told The Weeknd would arrive at 10:20. He showed up around 11:30 p.m. after Swedish House Mafia performed a setlist that was 35 minutes late. We were under the impression that Swedish House Mafia would act as more of a DJ for The Weeknd's show, or that their performances would be interwoven together. We could barely summon the energy to tap our feet as The Weeknd performed hits like Blinding Lights, The Hills, and Starboy. You can follow along with Insider's coverage. All of the new music that was played at the festival was covered by Emily. I never knew... Anyone who grew up going to American malls in the late 1990s and early 2000s probably remembers the dark pull of Abercrombie & Fitch. Between 1996 and 2004, the mall was ruled by the aspirational Americana store. In the documentary White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch, director Alison Klayman tracks how the store, which thrived on promoting beauty standards that idealized thinness and whiteness, began to come apart when employees began calling out what made it so.
