The original Echo smart speaker was introduced by Amazon. If you're looking for the best speaker, you're most likely going to look at the company's Echo line. Bose, Sonos, and Ultimate Ears are just a few of the companies that make great speakers that can be used with an Amazon device. This guide will help you make a decision about the best speaker for your house.

What is the best Alexa speaker you can buy today?

Most of the smart speakers and smart screen devices produced by Amazon are powered by the voice assistant. Some of the third-party options that you may wish to consider are compatible with more than one smart voice assistant.

The Amazon Echo is our top pick. The fourth generation of the Echo line has been completely redesign with better speakers, a rounded look, and a built-in smart hub to become the goldilocks of smart speakers. It's the right size to fill most rooms with great sound without looking like it's just another piece of techno-junk.

The popular line of smart screen speakers known as the Echo Show are owned by Amazon. The middle-child Echo Show 8 is our favorite. It has a large screen, speakers, and privacy controls. It is easier to fit smaller spaces than the larger Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen).

Our favorite third-party speaker is the Sonos One. The form factor is close to what you would get in an Amazon Echo with a more traditional speaker look. The sound quality is better than most echo speakers, and it can work with other smart voice assistants.

Here is a list of the best speakers that you can buy.

Amazon Echo 4th Gen

The fourth generation of this smart speaker carries the banner of its original name. We found that the new version of this product offers better sound quality than the old one and is less expensive. It has a soft, spherical design and is available in multiple colors.

The smart speaker that started it all was the Amazon Echo. The fourth iteration of the classic smart speaker from Amazon is far and away the best we have ever seen, according to our review.

The biggest change that most people will notice is that Amazon has changed the design of the new generation of Echos to a spherical shape. Pick any metaphor you want and apply it equally here. The new placement of the light ring at the bottom of the device makes this look like a piece of art rather than a typical piece of tech.

The sound quality for this model has been upgraded by Amazon, with the Echo delivering 360-degree audio. It added a second 0.8-inch front-firing tweeter to its already- capable array, which makes so much of a difference. It now competes on a level playing field with speakers twice as expensive as the one on our list. You can adjust the audio with the available settings from the app. You can connect the two speakers to the Fire TV.

The fourth generation of the Echo has a built-in Zigbee hub that it can use to communicate with and control other smart home devices. It is powered by Amazon's new AZ1 Neural Edge processor, which promises speech processing that is twice as fast as before, all while using 85% less memory. One of Amazon's first Climate Pledge Friendly certified products is the Echo (4th Gen), made with 50% recycled plastic, 100% recycled fabrics, and 100% recycled die-cast aluminum. 99% of the packaging is recycled. It will use less power with a new low power mode and a new energy dashboard can help you keep an eye on it.

We love the fabric design, responsive microphones for voice commands, and the ability to control the device from the top. This is a voice-first product, but it is good to know there are still visual clues to help you control it.

Echo Dot 2

(Image credit: Jeramy Johnson / Android Central)

The most popular Amazon speaker is the Echo Dot (4th Gen), due to its affordable price and the fact that it can do just about everything that the larger, more expensive Echo speakers can do. The only downside is that the audio quality is not as good as it could be. You can purchase two Echo Dots for the price of one, or you can choose an Echo Dot with a clock.

The price is not the only reason that the Echo Dot is the most popular speaker. It makes sense to get something relatively inexpensive if you are just starting with smart speakers. Customers have fallen in love with the Echo Dot because of its simplicity and how useful it is.

The fourth-generation model of the Echo Dot is better than ever, and it's incredibly affordable. Thanks to the new rounded shape and front-firing orientation of the 1.6-inch speaker, we found that the smart speaker sounded louder and clearer than before. The new fabric design comes in three great colors and is much better than the plain black or white versions of previous generations. You can upgrade the regular Dot to a version with anLED that shows the time, temperature, and timers for just $10 more. The new shape is similar to the larger Echo, and it has the same climate-friendly benefits.

This little speaker is a great value because it performs all of the same commands found on the more expensive speakers. You have the same buttons at the top of the device and the same light ring at the bottom as on the Echo (4th Gen), the only things that you sacrifice are the built-in Zigbee hub and the overall sound quality.

Echo Show 8 2nd Gen Hero 3

(Image credit: Nick Sutrich / Android Central)

Amazon was one of the first companies in the smart screen speaker space with the original Echo Show, but the Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) is far and away the best value version so far. Its screen is large, its speaker is loud, and it has camera shutters.

There is a smart screen in between the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) and the Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen) This is the middle of the road smart display that may be the perfect one for some buyers.

The Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) was determined to be the "Goldilocks" smart display because of its 8-inch display with a crisp 1200x800 resolution matching the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) and bettering it with a higherPPI resolution. You get two 2-inch speakers that kick out 10W of power per channel, along with a massive upgrade in the 13MP camera for video chats, as well as a slightly smaller twin 2.2-inch speakers in the larger Show. The camera is able to pan and zoom to keep you in the picture. There is a physical shutter that goes over the camera when you want some added privacy.

The Show 8 is pretty good. When you compare the Echo Show 8 to the Show 5, you can see that it is larger and more affordable than the flagship Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen). The device won't hog all of your counter space, but it will be a valuable visual assistant.

Echo Show 10 Lifestyle 2

(Image credit: Jeramy Johnson / Android Central)

Amazon has once again raised the bar in smart speaker/smart screen innovation with the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen). The best camera on a smart screen device, a silent screen, and dynamic speakers are some of the features of the device.

By the second generation, the company was able to squeeze in a larger screen into a device that was the same size as the first. The smaller Echo Show 5 and the larger Echo Show 8 were introduced, while the second generation of the show didn't see any updates for over two years. That will change in the fall of 2020 when Amazon introduces the third generation of the Echo Show.

The top-of-the-line device in the food chain is the new, large, and premium Echo Show. It has the biggest and best screen, the best camera, and our time spent with it led us to call it arguably the best-sounding speakers on an echo in our review.

Along with the technical improvements we already mentioned, the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) also comes with Amazon's new AZ1 Neural Engine, which helps power all of the on-device processing its new features require. The screen pivots to allow you to see that recipe you need to follow while prancing around the kitchen or keeping your kids in the frame. You can use the device to monitor your space while you are away.

Amazon Echo Studio

The bottom line is that the echo studio is Amazon's answer to the dream speaker. It can fill a room with sound and be used with a second TV for surround sound. It comes with a hub.

If you want a speaker that will make your music sound great, and you also want it to be smart, then the premium Alexa speaker is the one for you. This is Amazon's premier speaker regarding sound quality, with an array of five speakers that kick out impressive bass, midrange, and highs.

A feature that allows the studio to sense the room it is in and adapt its speakers accordingly for the best experience is included.

Thanks to the built-in Zigbee hub, supported smart home devices can connect directly to the studio instead of being connected to another hub in your home.

Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition (4th Gen)

Before you give your child a smart speaker, make sure it is safe and appropriate for them. The Echo Dot Kids Edition has fun kid designs and colors with built-in parent controls, as well as age-appropriate content.

Amazon has an item for kids. The fourth-generation Echo Dot has a better-sounding front-firing speaker and spherical design. The panda and tiger editions of the Echo Dot Kids Edition are very cute. Each unit comes with a year of Amazon Kids+.

The price tag is justified by the part that is more expensive than the retail version. Amazon Kids+ gives you access to a lot of kid-friendly content, including books, music, audiobooks, and more.

You can set how long the kid can use any of the new tech on the Amazon Parent Dashboard. It will block non-kid-friendly content, shut off the Echo Dot at night, and teach your kids to say please and thank you to not-quite-sentient tech.

Amazon recently announced that it is releasing the first child-friendly version of the Echo Show, the Echo Show 5 Kids. We will consider updating this list once we have a chance to try it out for ourselves.

Amazon Echo Show 15 Lifestyle

(Image credit: Chris Wedel / Android Central)

The largest smart display option from Amazon, the Echo Show 15, is perfect for watching your favorite shows. The display is great for mounted on the wall or sitting on a table, and the Alexa Widgets make great use of it.

The largest smart display option from the company was added with the addition of the Echo Show 15. It has enough room for the interface to shine when it is put in the summer of 2021. Your shopping list, calendar, weather, and more are all put in front and center by these tiles. The big screen is great for entertainment because of its support of full-HD streaming from services like Amazon&s own Prime Video and others. During our review, it became a staple in the kitchen as it was a great help for displaying recipes while cooking and listening to music.

The poor quality of the Echo Show 15's video calls is a letdown, but it can work with the built-in camera, which can be disabled with a physical shutter. Currently, the only options available on the Echo Show 15 are from Amazon. It is not a deal-breaker, but it is an area that will hopefully improve soon.

When mounted on the wall using the supplied brackets, the Echo Show 15 looks like a photo frame. The smart display can rest on your counter using either of the two stands offered separately or you can opt for a third option that mounts the Echo Show 15 under your cabinet. It is sure to find plenty of use if you choose to use this smart display.

Sonos One lifestyle

(Image credit: Jeramy Johnson / Android Central)

The Sonos One is our favorite third-party speaker because it looks great, sounds better, and fits within the well-established and easy-to-use Sonos audio platform. It is one of the most affordable smart speakers around.

The premier smart speaker manufacturer is Sonos. The company has built up an entire system of products that work together and make for a satisfying home audio experience.

Our review of the device described it as the Sonos smart speaker for everyone because it has a stylish yet subtle profile that fits in just about anywhere. This is the cheapest smart speaker on the market that you can use with your voice, and it's also the one that you can control with your voice. It works via Apple's wireless protocol.

You can control your smart home, play music or audiobooks, and ask questions if you connect your Sonos One to your Amazon account. The main difference between an Echo and a regular one is the speaker network you buy into. There is nothing wrong with an echo, but a lot of people love their Sonos setup.

Sonos Move standing up outside

If you want to take your music with you and control your speaker with your voice, you cannot find a better balance of sound, battery life, and water resistance than the Sonos Move.

Since the Amazon Tap wasn't hands-free, Amazon hasn't made a portable speaker. We have been waiting for the one from the Move from Sonos for a long time, and now we have it.

In our review of the Sonos Move, we said that we finally have a portable speaker that works with the Sonos platform. It makes a great home speaker when you aren't on the go, which is more than can be said for some of the other portable speakers we've seen.

The Move is a must- buy if you want something portable, or if you really love the idea of using your phone as a speaker. It is large, heavy, and it sounds amazing. You now get 11 hours of battery life before you need to dock it again.

Ultimate Ears Blast lifestyle

The Ultimate Ears BLAST is the ultimate waterproof speaker that you will want to bring with you to your next BBQ event, beach party, or backyard get-together.

Ultimate Ears is at the forefront of portable, durable, and rugged speakers. The BLAST line is one of the most popular because of its affordability, great sound, and great battery life.

The BLAST speaker has a 12-hour battery life and can be used with up to eight other people. The speaker has a loud and clear sound. You can pair other devices to it, but it also comes with a built-in microphone so that you can ask for your favorite party songs.

When you bring your speaker indoors, it charges on a simple base that keeps it upright, though not all configurations ship with this base charger. It makes a great Amazon Echo alternative when settled this way.

Sonos Beam Gen2 Credenza Black

Sometimes, the best option is more than one. The package of smart home controls and built-in access that the Sonos Beam gives you is designed to enhance your TV viewing and listening experience.

Not everyone has the same needs. Some want a small smart speaker that is out of the way, while others want something with room-filling sound. Some want a grab-and-go speaker to take with them for hours at a time, while others are more anchored to a particular space. Most of us want better sound from our TVs. We can get this with the soundbars like the Sonos Beam.

We did a review of the Sonos Beam a couple of years ago, but we haven't found another smart soundbar that can do what it does while sounding great. It enhances the sound to amplify the highs, mids, and lows of most built-in TV speakers.

You can use the voice assistant to control your smart home, but it's not the only thing it can do. You can use the Sonos Beam to control your TV, it's a wonderful accessibility and convenience feature. The Beam is an easy to set up and use smart speaker. If you only have oneAlexa speaker in your main TV room, this is the one you want to get.

Bose Home Speaker 500

The Bose Home Speaker 500 is the speaker giant's answer to the Amazon Echo and the Sonos Five. The speaker has a small screen.

If you're looking for a high-quality sounding speaker, the Bose Home Speaker is a great option. Bose is one of the premier audio companies. This is a great place to start if you already have other Bose products or want something different.

The small, iPod-sized screen on the front of the device makes it stand out from the crowd. If you want to know what is playing at a glance, or if you enjoy a bit of visual stimulation to go along with your auditory processing, this device is for you.

The speaker is compatible with both the Apple AirPlay 2 and the Google Assistant. It has eight microphones that can pick up your voice commands over loud noises in the environment and from the speaker itself. Two custom drivers are facing opposite directions inside. You can also control the speaker with buttons on the top, including preset for internet radio stations, as well as your voice and Bose app.

Facebook Portal Plus Lifestyle

(Image credit: Chris Wedel / Android Central)

Most of your family is probably on Facebook and you should say what you will about it. The Portal line of devices is one of the best for video chatting and staying in touch with loved ones.

We understand what you are going to say before you start with your objections. It is Facebook. The social media giant has not done much to gain our trust over the past few turbulent years. That is true. Many of the people you know, including a fair number of your family members, are probably still active on the platform, and those same people may be resistant to try other platforms, services, or devices for staying in touch. We bit the bullet for you and evaluated the device with a full Facebook Portal+ (2021) review, and we actually liked it!

I keep my Facebook account active because I know I can reach my contacts via Messenger chat, calls, or video whenever I want. Facebook has leaned into that advantage with this device. My 90-year-old grandmother is more likely to video chat with me on one of these than on the proprietary Amazon Echo Show video chat platform. She is.

The Facebook Portal+ is a superior video chatting device to most other smart screen displays. It is a great smart speaker for controlling your smart home gadgets or listening to music.

The digital assistant has come a long way since the cylindrical speaker that it was introduced on in 2014, with the number of speakers available now. With all of the changes that have come to the products, the in-house Amazon Echo 4th Gen is the one that gives you the most bang for your buck.

The sound of the Echo is excellent and it can handle your needs. If you prefer a smaller footprint for your smart speaker, the surprisingly powerful Echo Dot can satisfy that. You will get a great digital assistant that will sound great if you choose to go with an Amazon or a third-party speaker.
