We expect the NCAA Division I basketball committee to select the field in March, and that's why the ESPN efforts are focused on projecting the NCAA tournament field. The same data points favored by the committee, including strength of schedule and other season-long indicators, are used by Joe Lunardi in his projections of the field. Visit the NCAA website for a better understanding of the selection criteria.

There is a 68-team tournament.

The standard version of the NCAA tournament field has been in place since 2011. There will be some differences to past years if the field is made up of 68 teams.

The playing of the entire NCAA tournament at a single site is the primary adjustment from a normal year. There was a need for geographical considerations in seeding. The Ivy League decided to forgo the 2020-21 season, which will reduce the number of AQ entries to 31 for this season.

48 teams are in the tournament.

The field would be reduced by 10 at-large teams and 10 automatic qualified teams. The top four seeds in each region would receive a bye into the second round, with four first-round games per region.

First-round pairings will be guided by geography to the fullest extent possible. Only 32 teams are competing at the central site. The Lunardi Rule requires all participants to post a.500 conference record.

The 16-team brackets are in the tournament.

The 16 best teams are selected and seeds by the committee. The designated revenue unit is given to all non-competing conference champions.

Conference participation is capped at four teams. No region will have more than one team from the same conference.
