Even if nobody else is around, people who are concerned about getting Covid can still wear masks, like an N95 or KN95, according to Scott Gottlieb.
Two days after a federal judge in Florida nullified the Biden administration's Covid mask mandate for public transportation, Gottlieb commented. The mask rules for other settings have been loosened.
If you have a good-fitting mask, a high-quality mask on and you are wearing it well, you are going to afford yourself a high degree of protection.
Gottlieb argued that people who feel vulnerable will be able to protect themselves in that setting even if other people aren't wearing masks.
Major U.S. airlines said they would no longer require masks after the Florida ruling.
The Department of Justice said it will likely appeal the ruling.
The end of the public transit mask requirement has been met with relief by some and concern by others, especially people who have underlying health conditions that make them more vulnerable to serious Covid illness.
Many public-health measures for places like sports venues and restaurants have ended, but supporters of the mask mandate for public transit note that some people have no choice but to commute via trains and buses. They think the policy is an important layer of protection against Covid.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention decided last week to extend the mask policy until May 3, but Gottlieb thinks they should have let the mandate expire on Monday. He acknowledged that people will be made to feel vulnerable by this policy.
Gottlieb said that the masks were probably providing less protection than people think because most wore cloth masks.
For people who feel at risk, I would submit that one-way masking still works. He stressed the need for it to be a high-quality mask.
