The Wall Street Journal reported that the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia was threatening to move the country closer to Russia and China in order to punish President Joe Biden.

The US imposed sanctions on dozens of Saudis in February of 2021. The crown prince was not directly affected by the sanctions.

The Journal reported that the Saudis met last year at a seaside palace to discuss how the kingdom could get ahead of Biden.

The group discussed releasing more political prisoners to appease Biden, but Crown Prince Mohammed said Saudi Arabia should threaten to solidify alliances with Russia and China.

Loujain al-Hathlou was released from Saudi Arabia in February 2021. She was released in her wake.

The State Department did not respond to the request.

Saudi Arabia has grown closer to China since last year, but it is unclear if the Crown Prince Mohammed actually threatened the US with a move toward China and Russia.

The Saudis are upset that the US is not guaranteeing its security in the face of strikes on the Arabian Peninsula by the Iran-backed rebels in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has ignored US requests to increase oil output in order to make up for the White House's ban on Russian oil imports.

The US tried to get the Saudis to buy more oil, but the crown prince ignored the calls.
