  • Russian troops killed a man who shared his last name, according to Navalny.

  • The jailed Putin critic was unsure if the deceased Ukrainian was a relative.

  • The head of a village said the man was a distant relative of Navalny.

Russian troops killed a Ukrainian man because he had the same last name as a Putin critic, according to the jailed Russian opposition leader.

Navalny shared a picture of a passport with the name "Ily Ivanovich Navalny" that he said was left next to the body of a 60-year-old man.

A passport with the name Navalny is next to a dead body. The people were killed in the Ukrainian village of Bucha. The Russian opposition leader is named Ilya Ivanovich Navalny.

They killed him because of his last name. He said that his passport was thrown nearby because of that.

Russian occupation of the area lasted several weeks before it was liberated last month. The bodies of hundreds of civilians who appeared to have been killed in gruesome fashion were found after Ukraine regained control of the town.

Insider could not independently verify Navalny's claims.

According to the German newspaper, neighbors saw him moments before he was shot by Russian soldiers.

Maria said that they entered the block of flats when Ilya came down the stairs. I told him not to go out, but he still wanted to smoke a cigarette. I kept hearing shots.

Maria said she saw him dead on the floor after he was shot in the head. His passport was next to him.

Navalny said that the man came from the same village as his father, but he didn't know if he was a relative. The village of Nove Zalissia is located 15 miles from Bucha and is where Navalny's father is from.

The head of Nove Zalissia said that he was a distant relative of the Russian opposition leader.

The Ukrainian spelling of the name Alexei was used to say that Ilya was a distant relative of Oleksy.

He said he was a second cousin of the Russian opposition leader. Insider couldn't independently verify the claims.

After being poisoned with Novichok in Siberia, Navalny flew to Germany for medical treatment. He was arrested after returning to Russia.

He was sentenced for missing parole hearings while he was recovering from the poisoning, and was found guilty in a Russian court of fraud and contempt of court.

From prison, Navalny has continued to call on Russians to protest the war in Ukraine via social media. He was able to do it with the help of his lawyers.
