The Army has found replacements for the M4 rifle and M249 squad automatic weapon and is giving out a contract to put new guns in the hands of tens of thousands of soldiers.

The force is awarding a 10-year, $20.4 million contract to Sig Sauer for the XM5 Rifle, which will become the new standard rifle for soldiers, and the XM250 Automatic Rifle, which will replace the SAW.

The service will switch from 5.56mm to 6.8mm after searching for better rounds.

Land navigation is coming back to the army.

The Army said in a press release that both weapons fire common 6.8 millimeter ammunition using government provided projectiles and vendor-designed cartridges.

General Dynamics was one of the defense contractors that competed to be the Army's go-to small arms dealer.

The weapons will include a laser range finder, a calculator, and a compass. It is made by a company called Vortex.

It is not known how many weapons the Army will buy over the next decade, or how quickly soldiers will abandon their weapons. The force is requesting more than 30,000 new weapons. Congress needs to approve that budget.
