Outrage After Police Detain Crying Black Child Over Stolen Chips

A video of white police officers forcing a crying black boy into the back of their vehicle over a bag of stolen chips has spurred outrage.

A white male cop is seen holding a black child behind his back in a video that has been viewed more than 2.3 million times. As the boy sobs loudly, the cop puts him into the back of a police car as two other officers look on.

The bystander repeatedly asked Kenneth Jackson what was going on, according to Syracuse.com.

Another cop said that he was stealing stuff.

The man said he would pay for it.

The Syracuse Police Department said in a statement that the boy was taken home by the police after he was accused of stealing from a store. The boy was not put in handcuffs and no charges were filed. The incident was being reviewed.

The Mayor of Syracuse said in a statement that he was concerned when he first saw the video, but that no handcuffs were used and the child was taken home. He called for the city to support kids and families and invest in police.

The boy's father, Anthony Weah, told Syracuse.com that the cops who dropped off his son, who is 8 years old, were friendly but then saw the video of his son wailing and being forced into the back of a police car.

Why would the police treat that child that way? Weah told the news outlet that he had over a bag of chips.

He was grateful to the bystander who filmed the incident for standing up for them.
