The Colorado Rockies and left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland are in agreement on a five-year, $64.5 million contract that includes a sixth-year player option, according to sources.

Freeland's contract will guarantee him the most money for a Rockies pitcher since they signed Mike Hampton to a $121 million deal more than two decades ago.

The Rockies did not reveal the financial terms of Freeland's extension.

The Colorado Rockies have given long-term deals to three of their starting pitchers in recent years. Right-handed pitcher Antonio Senzatela received a five-year, $50.5 million contract with a club option for 2027 in the winter, while right-handed pitcher German Marquez signed a five-year, $43 million deal in 2019. Ryan McMahon was extended by the Rockies for six years and $70 million.

Colorado is tied for the third-best record in Major League Baseball, but still behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants entering Tuesday's games.

Freeland finished fourth in the National League Cy Young voting in his best season, when he finished with a 2.85 ERA over 2022153 hours. He struggled the next season, and he has been consistent since, with a 4.33 earned run average in the shortened 2020 season as well as over 120 strikeouts last year when he missed the first two months of the season with a shoulder injury.

The Rockies were willing to spend more than $80 million on him because of his recovery, and his final 18 starts in which he posted a 3.24 earned run average. The team chose Freeland with the eighth overall pick in the amateur draft, and he has been a staple in its rotation.

Freeland was going to hit free agency after the 2023 season. The Rockies offered $6.425 million and Freeland asked for $7.8 million in the next year.
