The Biden administration is expected to announce another substantial security assistance package forUkraine this week, five U.S officials tell NBC News.

Three officials said the package will be the same size as the one Biden announced last week.

Biden confirmed earlier in the day that the U.S. will send more weapons to Ukraine. Biden said yes when asked if he planned to send more weaponry to Ukraine.

The United States has given more than 50 million rounds of weapons to the Ukrainians. As troops go through tens of thousands of rounds a day, there is an urgent need for more aid.

The need for more shelling was raised when Biden joined a call with more than a half-dozen world leaders.

John Kirby, Pentagon spokesman, declined to provide details of the upcoming weapons package due to security concerns. Kirby said that the makeup of previous U.S. security packages comes directly from conversations with the Ukrainians.

The security package announced on April 13 included 18 howitzer systems, the first of their kind to be transferred to Ukrainian forces. The Army and Marine Corps had their own inventories of 40,000 rounds.

Kirby said that the training of the Ukrainian troops on how to use the howitzers would be conducted outside of the country.

US soldiers work on their vehicles at a temporary base installed close to the Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport, south eastern Poland, February 16, 2022.

The next security package will be the eighth. After weeks of stalling ground advances on the capital city of Kyiv, the U.S. intelligence assessment indicated that the Kremlin will soon focus its military might in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Russian forces on the ground in Ukraine have had a number of logistical problems in the past seven weeks, including shortages of food and fuel.

A senior U.S. Defense official told reporters on Tuesday that the Pentagon had observed a limited offensive by Russian forces.

The Defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that the offensives are part of a larger plan by the Russians.

The official said that the U.S. will send another seven military aircraft in the next 24 hours.

More than 100,000 U.S. troops have been sent to NATO-member countries by the Biden administration. According to the White House, the U.S. has provided more than $3 billion to Ukraine since the beginning of Biden's presidency.
