The third pick of the 2018 draft was one reason Ben McAdoo took the job as Carolina's offensive coordinator.

The way it is in the building right now, Sam is our starting quarterback, but the former New York Giants head coach added that coach Matt Rhule has a say over the decision.

The only quarterbacks under contract for the next two years are P.J. Walker and Sam Darnold.

One of the things that I have been working on is being better talking to you people, so I just put my foot in my mouth and announce the starting quarterback here.

That wasn't something I should have said.

Since the New York Jets drafted him, McAdoo has liked parts of his game. He told the New York Post that he had a lot of magic in his game, but he wondered if the Jets needed him to be a franchise-saver.

He couldn't get past the flaws in Darnold's throwing mechanics.

He can make plays with his feet, according to the Post. I would have a hard time drafting a guy in the first round that you don't like the way he throws.

Guys have overcome it, but that is something that is a challenge for me. I believe in the fundamental flaws and I will be looking at that to fix it. The quarterback's top job is to pass the football. If I don't like the way he throws the ball, I have a hard time picking him.

After spending last season as a consultant for the Dallas Cowboys, McAdoo chose to come to Carolina.

In his first interview since being hired, McAdoo said that Sam has some magic in his game. I am looking forward to working with Sam. He has shown flashes of being a good player in this league, and we have been working the last few days to get up to speed on offense.

The left tackle is more likely to be taken by the Carolinas than the quarterback. They have been evaluating quarterbacks for the past few months and used seven official visits on the position. There have been visits with Liberty, Pittsburgh, Ole Miss, Cincinnati, North Carolina, and Western Kentucky.

According to draft analysts, the most likely to go in the first round are Willis, Pickett, and Corral.

Being game ready is not something that McAdoo puts a lot of stock in.

He said that he was a big swing for the fences kind of guy. Ready does factor in some scenarios. Experience helps. Some guys may be helped by the type of system you played.

At the end of the day, you have to pick a player that you will be happy with for the next decade.

Eli Manning had two of his better seasons towards the end of his career, thanks to the help of Ben McAdoo. One week after benching Manning, he was fired.

After he went 4-7 last season, the Carolinas had so many questions about him that they were willing to give the Houston Texans three first-round draft picks.

After the season, Carolina general manager Scott Fitterer said that Sam Darnold was in the lead for the job.

Despite reports that the Carolinas are interested in trading for the Cleveland quarterback, McAdoo appears to be open to the idea of him being his starter. League sources told ESPN that the team simply has been doing due diligence on the position and that if a trade occurred it would be after the draft.

In the Post article, McAdoo said that he didn't see a lot of pro-style football in the tape of the quarterback.

On Tuesday, McAdoo declined to talk about it.

McAdoo said he would keep the comments to players on the roster.
