  • Heard is accused of defamation by Johnny Depp, who is taking her to trial.

  • Heard has put on a show of strength over the past week with more masculine, suited courtroom looks.

  • Heard is sending a message with her outfits and how it will affect her case.

On May 27th, 2016 Johnny Depp and Amber Heard broke up in dramatic fashion. Heard, dressed in a black-belted dress, showed up in court with a marked face, petitioning a judge for a restraining order against her husband.

Heard is back in court to defend herself against allegations that she lied about being abused by Depp and ruined his career.

In the last week of testimony, Heard has conveyed a different image than the one she wore when she first made the allegations. Experts say that she has a sense of power and authority in her looks.

Insider spoke to experts about the significance of Heard's courtroom looks and whether they will help or hurt her case.

A show of strength

Dr. Huntley Taylor is not sure if Heard's power suits will help convince the jury that she is the real victim.

The jury's perception of a player in a case depends on how they appear in court. She made a conscious decision and I am going to project it to the jury.

She is presenting herself as a powerful woman. Powerful women can be abused. Taylor doesn't think she has an advantage to be dressed this way.

Dr. Dawnn Karen believes that the case could set a precedent for how women dress for court in the future.

Anna Sorokin appeared to play up her youthfulness with babydoll dresses and choker necklaces.

Karen said she thinks Heard's courtroom attire has been intentional, but could signify a shift in the culture that allows women to project a strong appearance and still have their voices heard.

I think wearing clothes that appear more gender-neutral or more masculine is antithetical to what is normally done. Women are getting justice with the #MeToo movement. I don't think they need to play up their victimhood. Karen said that she thinks the gender-neutral form of dressing shows that.

Color symbolism

Some symbolism was found in the looks of Depp and Karen. He wore a white tie during opening statements.

White means innocence. Karen said that she found it very particular at the neck.

Diane Craig, a corporate coach who has helped clients with image consulting, thinks Heard's looks are helping her win credibility with the jury.

The suits work as a counterbalance to the more artistic image Heard would normally give off as an actress.

Craig said that the suit says that her thoughts are more organized and that helps to add to her credibility. Creative people under stress can become quite chaotic and she is under a lot of stress right now. She wants to project a calm demeanor.

Playing the part

The looks of Heard project a woman who is in a strong emotional state.

Heard looks like a business person and she wants to be seen and heard.

On the other hand, Craig said she feels that Depp is presenting a softer appearance by keeping his long hair.

The hair is not sleek, it is freer, softer, and not as harsh. Craig said that sometimes his appearance is dramatic and right now it is much softer.

She said the courtroom is a different kind of stage for the actors and she believes that they know what they are doing with their looks.

She said that they know how to adapt to different stages.
