Apple Store employees are trying to form a union at the company's flagship Grand Central Terminal location in New York City. According to CNBC, the group leading the effort, Fruit Stand Workers United, made the request on Monday in an update posted to its website.

The group said that they wanted a minimum of $30 for all workers, with a matrix based on role, tenure and performance.

Apple pays retail employees between $17 and $30 per hour, depending on their role and experience, according to The Washington Post.

Fruit Stand Workers United started collecting signatures from their co-workers. If at least 30 percent of eligible employees at the store express interest in forming a union, the group can file with the National Labor Relations Board to hold an election. According to The Post, at least three other stores are trying to form a union.

Apple announced at the beginning of the year that it would offer additional benefits to all of its US retail employees. Increased vacation and sick days, paid parental leave, and more are included in the company's expanded benefits. Apple has had a hard time retaining frontline workers during the Pandemic. The company's retail employees have complained of difficult working conditions, including issues with low pay and stress due to staffing shortages.
