Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio are two cult titles that will be getting big-budget remakes. The Japanese game giant wants to create new games that can become global hits and deliver recurring revenue, according to a report.
There are a number of attributes that have built its success. It is a free-to-play, cross-platform, and revenue generating game. It's hard to know how you can create a Fornite-like hit without replicating Fornite's key qualities.

There are some vague hints of the plans for this department that have been appearing for a while now. The company named Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi as examples of past intellectual property in its annual earnings report. Streets of Rage was one of the games named. The internal Super Game initiative was discussed in the report and later explained by Sony's Shuji Utsumi. He mentioned vaguely to NFTs, but I think executives just say that right now.
Utsumi said earlier this month that several Super Game projects were currently underway, and now it's been reported that Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio are also in the works. The new Crazy Taxi game has been in development for a year and will be released in the year 2025. There is no mention of Jet Set Radio in the publication, and both new games are in the early stages of creation and could still be canceled.
Things are still very much in development, but it's intriguing to imagine what the future holds for these properties. Both titles arrived on the Dreamcast in 2000 and gained cult followings for their stylish graphics and soundtracks. Crazy Taxi required players to deliver fares around a fictional San Francisco as quickly as possible, while Jet Set Radio offered a number of game modes focused on inline skating and graffiti.
Jet Set Radio's use of factions and competition seems like it would work well in a mass-participation mode like the one that helped make Fortnite so popular. Maybe a new theme song from The Offspring will be part of the reboot of Crazy Taxi? That would get the attention of people who played these titles.
