After the September 11 attacks, Russian President Putin and former US President George W. Bush traveled to a small Texan town where Bush owns a ranch. The two leaders spoke at a high school after leaving the ranch.

The Crawford Summit took place in Crawford, Texas, on November 15, 2001, with both presidents less than a year into their first terms in office.

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia was trying to reestablish relations with the West. A glimpse of Putin early in his rise to power in Russia was reflected in the meeting.

We had a great dinner last night, we had a little Texas barbecue, a little Texas music. Bush told the students that he would be welcome to come back next August. Maybe you would like to go to Siberia in the winter.

Bush mentioned that Putin and his wife stayed at his ranch.

It is my honor to introduce President Putin to Crawford. Bush said that a lot of people never imagined that an American President and a Russian President would meet. We were enemies for a long time.

Bush said that they were working together to break the old ties to establish a new spirit of cooperation and trust so that they could work together to make the world more peaceful.

Putin said they did not expect things to be as warm and homey as they were at the ranch of Bush. The people who live hundreds and thousands of miles from the capital are the core of any country.

Putin praised Russian contributions to the US and highlighted shared cultural histories by way of migration.

The war in Afghanistan was only two months old when students asked about it. The two leaders were asked how the fall of the Taliban government would affect women's rights.

Bush said that the Taliban is the most repressive, backward group of people we have seen on the face of the Earth in a long time.

He told the students that he wanted Putin to speak about human rights as well. In Afghanistan, this phenomenon has taken an extreme form, and the disrespect of human rights has become more extreme.

Putin said that women in Afghanistan are not treated as people.
