The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against a towing company in Virginia Beach, Virginia, that sold or trashed the vehicles and personal belongings of at least seven U.S. service members.

The company failed to recognize military ownership of multiple vehicles when it violated the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, according to court documents.

The DoJ is trying to recover damages for the Navy SEAL and other service members.

The Department of Justice is taking action to ensure that all service members who are harmed by unscrupulous actions receive just compensation, according to a press release.

This is not the first time that businesses have been reprimanded by the DoJ for selling vehicles to troops. The SCRA, which was enacted in 2003 and requires a court order to dispose of property owned by a service member during their military service, or for 90 days after they separate, applies to towing companies.

According to DoJ court documents, a Navy officer from the elite SEAL Team 2 parked his two cars in a lot across from headquarters while he was deployed overseas from October to April 2020.

His 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ 73 had a duffel bag of military uniforms and a Navy challenge coin, and his 1987 Toyota 4Runner had Arizona license plates.

After Steve's Towing towed the two vehicles, they filed with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to take ownership of the property.

Although the car service company contacted the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, it did not do so in Arizona, where the vehicles were registered.

The general manager of Steve's Towing was completely shocked by the filing on Friday.

We love our military and wouldn't auction off an active-duty military vehicle knowingly, according to Gilliam.

There is no court date for the case that was filed in the Eastern District Court of Virginia.

Service members and dependents who think their SCRA rights have been violated can reach out to their nearest armed forces legal assistance program office.

Steve's Towing had not been served with the court paperwork as of Monday afternoon, but the company continues to tow vehicles for the military police.
