The movie version of Mojang Studio'sMinecraft is starting to come together. According to The Hollywood Reporter, action hero veteran Jason Momoa is in talks to star in a film adaptation of a game. While no contract has been signed yet, the possible addition of Momoa is an encouraging sign of life for a film that has been on Warner Bros back burner. Warner Bros had planned to release the film in March of 2022, but production delays related to the Pandemic made that impossible. The original director and screenwriters quit the movie due to creative differences with Mojang.
Dune producers Mary Parent and Roy Lee are also on board, as are Napoleon Dynamite'sJared Hess. It's not clear what role Momoa will play in the film, as it's still unknown what elements of the game will appear in the film and whether we'll see fan favorites like Steve. The film's storyline is pretty straightforward, and it involves a young girl and her group of unlikely friends trying to save the Overworld.
Fans should expect more changes to the film in the near future. Warner Bros. will need to start production on the film before January 23, 2023, because the lease on the rights to Minecraft expires that month.
