The federal government will no longer enforce the transportation mask mandate after the District Court ruled that the requirement was not within the authority of the CDC.
American Airlines has told employees that masks are no longer required. It will take a couple of days for this all to trickle through the guidance given to employees across 6000 flights a day. If cabin crew haven't gotten the memo and are working a flight tonight or tomorrow, please give them a break.
I am waiting to hear from American if they will allow passengers banned solely over mask compliance to fly again, as the airline had suggested when their requirement first went into effect in 2020 (Alaska Airlines has already confirmed in their case).
Passengers are now required to have face masks on. The major airlines won't enforce the requirement at the gate if a passenger isn't wearing a mask. They will still.

On Thursday American Airlines spoke to investors and journalists on their earnings call about the financial results during the first quarter and the challenges that lie ahead. Senior leadership at the airline always hold a forum after the earnings call where they speak to employees.

United won't get law enforcement involved. They will not threaten the ban to get compliance from the customer. The flight attendant can report the customer after the flight. If they don't mention the possibility of a ban.
