  • According to a CNBC report, some Republicans want Manchin to run for president in 2024.

  • That could lead to a primary battle against Trump.

  • Manchin supports Democrats on key priorities, but he doesn't want to switch parties.

Some well-heeled GOP donors would like to see Joe Manchin run for president as a Republican in 2024, as he continues to stymies key aspects of the agenda of President Joe Biden.

CNBC reported on Monday that Manchin attended a $5,000-per-plate luncheon at the Florida estate of Nelson Peltz, a billionaire investor who has been friends with the West Virginia Democrat.

According to an attendee who spoke with CNBC, Manchin told the group that he plans to run for re-election in West Virginia in 2024. Several top executives at the fundraiser want Manchin to switch parties and run against Biden in the general election in 2024, despite that.

A Manchin spokesman pushed back against the CNBC report and said he would continue to represent West Virginians to the best of his ability.

Senator Manchin has made it clear that he is focused on doing what is best for West Virginia and the country regardless of political affiliation. He has always been focused on doing what is right, not pleasing party elites or winning elections.

At least 50 other executives who mostly contribute to Republicans were at the event, including Steve Schwarzman, Ken Langone, Bernard Marcus, and Leon Cooperman.

Mr. Peltz supports Mr. Manchin. A spokeswoman for Peltz told CNBC that he believes Mr. Manchin is a rare elected politician from both sides of the aisle who puts country before party.

Manchin has insisted that he is not interested in changing parties, but the conservative Democrat has mused that he doesn't know where in.

Manchin torpedoed much of the Biden plan. He argued that the social and climate bill would swell the national debt to unacceptable levels.

Manchin has carved out a voting record that makes it unlikely that conservative voters would flock to him in a GOP primary. Manchin cast a vote to convict Trump in both of his impeachment trials.

He was a reliable backer of Biden's judicial nominees and voted to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson earlier this month.

The Republican tax cuts were opposed by Manchin. He favors raising taxes on the richest Americans to pay for a scaled-down version of their social and climate spending bill.
