The brand's Gen 2 mobile connector will no longer be included in new purchases. The charging kit can be added for a reduced price.
The Gen 2 Mobile Connector Bundle, which includes a 20-foot cable, a 220V-240V adapter and a storage bag, will now cost $400 when purchased separately. The Level 1 kit adds about two to three miles of range to the car's battery. That is much slower than plugging into a public charging station.
The move comes as the company prepares to ramp up production at its new Gigafactories in Austin and Berlin.
Over the weekend, Musk said that the change was due to customer feedback. The decision to sell the bundle separately was explained by Musk. We will include more plug adaptors with the mobile kit.
Plug adaptors can be purchased separately from the kit. The kit will now include some adaptors.
Musk said that the mobile connection is not necessary for drivers who use the Supercharger network. He said that buyers should install a wall connection before the car arrives.
Even though most drivers top up through a wall or Supercharger station, there are some who say the mobile kit is useful when traveling through remote areas.
It is too early to tell if other EV makers will follow in the footsteps ofTesla. The EV6 does not have charging cables.
