Today is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the electronic instrument maker, and it is teaming up with a boutique publisher to announce a coffee table book. A tome called "50 Years ofRoland History" is a 400 page account of the tech, people and culture behind the company.
There are several chapters in the book that explore the impact of certain products on music scenes. The Jupiter-8 synthesizer, Boss guitar pedals, TR-808 Rhythm Composer, and the TB-303 Bass Line are all explained in the book. Keytars, groovesboxes, and V-Drums will be covered in the book, as well as how the Octa Pad became a staple of modern music in India.
In addition, there are many interviews with artists and designers. Johnny Marr of The Smiths, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Sister Bliss of Faithless, Orbital, Peaches, Swizz Beatz, Jean-Michel Jarre and Nick Rhodes are just a few of the famous people you can expect to hear from.
Through the crowd funding site, Bjooks has published glossy books on topics such as guitar pedals, modular synthesis and interface design. In 2020, it collaborated with Moog for a book about the Mother lineup.
The music will be released this summer. Pricing has not been revealed.
