Sheriff Mike Reese of the Multnomah County wrote an open letter to the residents of Portland and the surrounding area this week, warning that violent crime is reaching record heights and may only get worse as the summer approaches.

Sheriff Mike Reese wrote Friday that he was deeply concerned about the current trends in community violence.

The number of people in jail for murder or attempted murder at the beginning of April was the most since the mid-1990s.

Portland has seen a much higher rate of homicides than other cities in the country.

The city has seen 25 homicides in the first three months of the year, setting it up to break last year's mark.

The number of murders in Los Angeles County has gone up over 85% so far this year.

The number of people in the jails for serious felonies like kidnappings, robberies, and sex crimes has gone up.

Reese wrote that this is not the only serious threat to public safety.

Other parts of the United States have the same problems. More than 31,000 people died in car crashes in the first nine months of the year, which was the most since 2006 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The number of drug overdose deaths in the US increased last year, according to the CDC.

Fatal overdoses are no. A national emergency is one of the causes of death among US ADULTS.

Taking firearms from people who are not allowed to have them, engaging in outreach for homeless people, and increasing funding for specialty teams that investigate criminal organizations are some of the actions proposed by the sheriff.

We need to act quickly. Reese wrote that summer is a time when violence increases in the community.

The police budget was cut by 15 million dollars in June 2020, but was increased by $5.2 million late last year due to the increase in crime.

The OIR Group found that the Portland Police Bureau is suffering from declining morale.

The report said that the repeated references to a lack of support from the City government seemed even more acute than the frustration with protesters.
