Kevin McCarthy suggested that Russia probably wouldn't have invaded Ukraine if the US had sent aid sooner.
McCarthy said in an interview with Fox News Sunday that the situation is going to get stronger and rougher and that the weapons the Ukrainians are asking for are not what the Americans are asking for.
McCarthy was a strong supporter of Donald Trump during his first impeachment proceedings, when he faced allegations of withholding humanitarian aid from Ukraine in an attempt to coerce the country to investigate allegations of corruption related to Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
McCarthy said in his defense of Trump that nothing in the phone call was impeachable. McCarthy defended the former president's decision to not give aid to Ukraine, before changing his mind this week.
McCarthy said on Sunday that moving the weapons to Ukraine earlier would have saved thousands of lives.
McCarthy did not respond to the request for comment.
