Fred Upton, Michigan's retiring GOP congressman, told "Meet the Press" on Sunday that death threats will make it difficult for good people to run in future elections.

There are death threats. I mean, they never were like we had this last year, but it was pretty crazy, and I received threats for voting in favor of the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

Someone left a voicemail for the congressman that said "I hope you die", which the congressman publicly released. I hope everyone in your family dies.

Getting good people to run is going to be a problem. It will be because I have a school board member who lives on my street and he got death threats over the mask mandate.

The Michigan Rep. announced his retirement earlier this month, withdrawing from a competitive primary challenge from Bill Huizenga. The increasing threats made it easier for him to step away from Congress.

It puts you at risk, particularly when they threaten not only you, but your spouse or your kids as well.
