The cast of Thor: Ragnarok in a promotional poster for the film.

If you keep up with anything related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you will most likely have seen the trend of the trailer for THOR: LOVE and THUD over the last few weeks. In a non-pandemic world, we would have had a logo and some character art on the side of toy packaging.

Let's ignore the part where at least half of the users demanding a trailer are almost certainly bots trying to gas up hype for the film, along with the fact that VFX crews are being worked basically around the clock for these tentpole blockbusters. The third piece of MCU media for the year is on film #29. The argument could be made that since Eternals is at a point where it doesn't really mean anything, the fans should be allowed to do all the work for them. The idea of a time travel plot in the film was briefly played around with, with several early promo and trailers using footage from previous movies in lieu of divulging anything about the film.

People love the movies, and they love the characters, and they love the actors. Taika Waititi has enough of his own built in fan base that he can ignore the mess Disney is making with the queer portion of their fans. These movies sell themselves from the moment casting announcements and logos hit, and it's likely that Marvel will get away with just withholding footage or information on a film while still relying on word of mouth to rake in a ton of money. Is that a bad thing? Let's not act like it isn't possible!

Is there still a need for trailers? They would not show anything at all. Let us know what you think in the comments.
