Chris Coons of Delaware said on Sunday that he is worried that Russian President Vladimir Putin will turn Ukraine into a war-torn Syria if the war continues.

During an interview with CBS News, the Democratic lawmaker said that Putin has shown us how brutal he can be and has been allowed to commit war crimes in Ukraine.

There hasn't been enough interference from NATO and Western countries.

He said that he was worried that Ukraine would turn into Syria.

The war in Syria has killed hundreds of thousands of people and caused millions to flee, according to the United Nations Human Rights Council. UN human rights investigators said in March that the poverty rate in Syria had reached 90 percent.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on the countries that have given military assistance to give his troops more weaponry.

Coons said on Sunday that the US has an interest in Ukraine prevailing.

He said that the American people can't turn away from the tragedy in Ukraine.
