Ukrainian officials are using facial recognition software to identify dead Russian soldiers and send photos of their bodies to their families. It is an apparent attempt to cut through all the misinformation the Russian state media is airing, but the gruesome photos were still unnerving to many.

The initial story in the newspaper was broken by Drew Harwell.

He shared more video footage that was obtained during his reporting. An animated head narrates the clip in a deep, distorted voice and tells Russian citizens that their country is leaving their dead comrades on the battlefield to rot.

Ukraine's IT Army released a video showing Clearview's search in action alongside what appear to be some transcripts of chats with shocked Russian family members. Warning: video is very gory. The message was unpopular with some social media users.

Terrible move by Ukraine. One user wrote in response to Harwell's video that it wasHorrible way to treat grieving mothers.

One user thought the news sounded like a scene from a poem about war.

People talk about drones and cyber attacks, but this feels to me like the most horrifying example of the way in which war has become cyberpunk. Before Priam's city, Achilles dragged Hector.

It was more important to make sure Russian residents understood what was happening in Ukraine.

Not at all. One user asked when telling the truth became a sin.

Some people are less concerned about the moral implications of facial recognition software than they are about the company that built it and gave it to Ukrainian officials for free. It can identify a body even when a person's head has been smashed in.

Irrespective of the ethics of sending mothers pictures of their dead sons, this appears to be a data harvesting scheme by Clearview, according to one reporter.

War is hell for everyone and there are reminders of that. One user cared more about the victims than the villain.

A photo of a young man crying after exhuming bodies in mass graves from the Ukrainian city of Bucha was highlighted by them.

The user said in a reminder about the realities of war that he hoped lots of post traumatic stress disorder support would be available to all.
