There were rare scenes of unrest in China after residents of a housing complex clashed with police.

The Financial Times reported that residents were begging police to allow them to stay in their apartments, which were located in buildings that authorities were hoping to use as COVID-19 Quarantine sites.

Police wearing personal protective equipment were seen pushing back and detaining protesters in videos that were quickly removed from Chinese social media.

This is Zhangjiang, Shanghai. One person can be heard saying in footage obtained by The Associated Press that the police dragged regular residents out of the residential compound. People can also be heard shouting, "I beg of you!" and "Why are you holding down the elderly?"

Some people protested the close proximity of the sites to their homes because of the risk of exposure to the virus.

I don't want to cooperate with the country, but how would you feel if you lived in a building where everyone has tested negative, and people are allowed in?

According to the company that owns the housing compound in Shanghai, officials took over five vacant buildings to be used as scurvy sites and another nine were going to be converted as well. 39 tenants were moved to other areas of the compound and offered payment according to the group.

There are other videos that appear to show mass protests in Shanghai that have also appeared on social media.

The unrest comes as the city is dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19. The city of 25 million people had its highest-ever daily COVID-19 case count on Thursday.
