San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel said he has received death threats and racist messages on social media.

Samuel made a statement in a video posted on social media.

Samuel stopped following the 49ers on the website as he reportedly seeks a new contract, and scrubbed his social media pages of references to the team.

It is not clear if the messages are related to Samuel's rumored desire for a new deal.

Samuel wants a new contract. After seeing some of the money wide receivers were getting at the start of free agency, he was joking with fans about what a deal would look like.

The 49ers have a history of signing their core players to extensions, but it tends to take them longer than it might for another team.

The extensions for George Kittle and Fred Warner were cited by Maiocco.

General manager John Lynch told reporters in February that long-term extensions for Samuel and Nick Bosa have been planned for.

The receiver market has changed a lot in the next two months. After being traded from their previous teams, Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams signed the largest deals for wide receivers.

The richest five-year deal for a receiver in the history of the league is the one that Adams has with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Buffalo Bills' Stefon Diggs is fourth on that list with an average salary of $24 million.

In the final season of his contract, Samuel will earn $3.986 million. He was one of the best offensive players in the league last year. He set a career high with 1,405 receiving yards, led the league with 18.2 yards per reception, ran for 361 yards and scored 14 total touchdown.
