At the time of publication, the leading hypotheses are either a new variant with a distinct clinical syndrome or a routinely circulating variant that is more severely impacting younger children.

The researchers wrote that a novel or undetected virus can't be ruled out.
Ars gave a breakdown of how severe this new condition can be. 13 children between the ages of 3 and 5 have had severe cases of hepatitis in Scotland, according to the outlet. There have been no reported deaths, but a few cases required transplants for young patients. The US CDC didn't respond to a request for comment, but cases have been reported there.
